ADRIAN YOUNGE & ALI SHAHEED MUHAMMAD GENESIS

On their own label, Jazz is Dead, Adrian Younge & Ali Shaheed Muhammad are to release their 16th record - this time collaborating with Phil Ranelin on trombone and Wendell Harrison on tenor saxophone. Following on from the smooth groove of 'Running with the Tribe', 'Genesis' is the second song from the record. The piece opens like the beginning of a storm - gentle and slow at first, gradually brewing to something more powerful. Hands gently make contact with the skin of a drum like the pattering of rain, accompanied by misty trombone, whilst cymbals gradually go from soft and slow to brisk and energetic like thunderclouds moving quickly through the sky. Once the storm passes, space and light is created by the bass and drums, resulting in an uplifting, funky groove. The electric guitar and saxophone are in relaxed conversation like old friends. The track stops and starts, with moments liberated from scales and chords, making 'Genesis' feel very free and unconfined. It even becomes psychedelic at points, like when the electric guitar is effected with fierce wah and distortion and the saxophone grows entirely unhinged. 'Genesis' is an explosive second track to a very promising release. The forthcoming record JID016, is to be released in full on 27th January, 2023. Listen to 'Genesis' here. -Ellie Rose-Davies
